Attorney General Merrick Garland will reportedly release Special Counsel Jack Smith's report on 2020 election interference against President-elect Donald Trump, according to a court filing.
The Ministry of Justice announced this on the 11th.th The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Circuit said Wednesday that Garland plans to release Volume 1 of Smith's final report to Congress and the public. The report also addresses allegations surrounding how Trump allegedly tried to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.
However, the AG will not release the second volume of the classified documents case against Trump while the two defendants in the case are still undergoing criminal proceedings.
The chairs and ranking members of the House and Senate Judiciary committees will be allowed to view Volume 2, but will be prohibited from publicly discussing the report.
“This limited release promotes the public interest in keeping Congressional leadership informed of important departmental matters while protecting the defendants' interests,” Justice Department lawyers wrote in a motion seeking to block the release of the report. I will do it,” he said.
It is customary for the special counsel to issue a final report, detailing the findings of the investigation and explaining the decision to indict or not indict.
Additionally, Smith was expected to release a final report later this month, possibly as early as this weekend. He also plans to resign before President Trump takes office on January 20th.th.
Mr. Trump's team first turned to U.S. District Judge Eileen Cannon, who agreed to block the release of the entire report on Tuesday, pending a promised submission by Mr. Smith's team.
Cannon noted that Smith is “temporarily prohibited” from “publishing, sharing, or transmitting the final report or any draft thereof outside the Department of Justice.”
Meanwhile, the order remains in effect until three days after the release of 11 resolutions from the U.S. Court of Appeals.th circuit.
Smith was chosen by Garland in 2022 to investigate both Trump's alleged efforts to overturn the presidential election and the president's withholding of classified documents at his Florida mansion.
Mr. Trump has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
Last summer, Mr. Cannon dismissed Smith's lawsuit over classified records, ruling that his appointment as special counsel was illegal. Mr. Smith subsequently withdrew his appeal of Cannon's decision in the confidential records case. And in November, federal judge Tanya Chutkan dropped Smith's charges against Trump in the 2020 election interference case.
