Agent assesses Shedeur Sanders' chances of starting despite being in a backup position

Quarterback Situation for Shedur Sanders with the Cleveland Browns

Rookie quarterback Shedur Sanders finds himself in a bit of a tricky spot with the Cleveland Browns. Despite being in a backup position, a leading NFL agent sees potential for him to become a starter in the future.

His teammate, fellow rookie quarterback Dilongabriel, was recently promoted to starting quarterback after veteran Joe Fraco was traded to the Cincinnati Bengals. Sanders, now in the second-string role behind Gabriel, garnered some mixed reactions from the media when he was asked about his thoughts on Gabriel being named the starter. His reply was somewhat peculiar—he silently moved his lips without actually saying anything.

Lee Steinberg, an agent representing top draft players, suggests that Sanders’ silence could be attributed to the frustrations that often come with competition. “He felt his response was okay,” Steinberg commented. “It’s really unrealistic to think players will be thrilled about being put in a backup role.” Nonetheless, he felt Sanders could have given a more detailed answer if he were his client.

Steinberg outlined tentative thoughts on what Sanders might say: first, that he’s eager to start in the league, which he considers his destiny. Secondly, he emphasized a commitment to supporting Dilongabriel as best as possible.

In his debut as a starter, Gabriel threw for 190 yards with two touchdowns, despite the team losing to the Minnesota Vikings 21-17. Gabriel, drafted in the third round, has established himself as a potential long-term option for the Browns, making Sanders’ journey to starting more complicated.

Interestingly, Sanders was selected only in the fifth round, a significant drop considering he was once predicted to be the first overall pick. Now, he’s tasked with navigating this challenging backup role as Gabriel continues to solidify his status. However, Steinberg still strongly believes that Sanders will likely get a chance as a starter at some point this season.

Looking ahead, Steinberg suggested that waiting in the wings could actually benefit Sanders’ career. He mentioned that if Gabriel emerges as the go-to quarterback, other teams will definitely consider giving Sanders an opportunity in the future.

“Time can be an asset,” Steinberg noted. He pointed out that many successful quarterbacks, including Jordan Love and Patrick Mahomes, had beneficial experiences sitting on the bench during their early years.

Essentially, he concludes that while Sanders’ current situation may seem challenging, there’s room for growth. Having patience can certainly pay off in the long run, and decisions about Sanders’ future will be made when the time is right.
