Confrontation During ICE Arrest in New Jersey

On Tuesday, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) reported an incident in New Jersey involving a Honduran individual illegally in the country. The suspect reportedly rammed a law enforcement vehicle while attempting to flee arrest, leading agents to fire at the suspect’s tires to prevent further danger.

A video captures a tense moment, showing a police officer drawing his weapon during the conflict. This took place in Roxbury Township, located about 55 miles northwest of Newark. Jesus Fabian López Banegas tried to escape by colliding with an ICE vehicle, almost striking an officer in the process.

The footage depicts officers at the scene, guns drawn, as the law enforcement vehicle and the suspect’s pickup faced each other on the snowy roadside.

The situation escalated to a point where the officer stood with his weapon drawn, but eventually, the suspect exited his vehicle with his hands raised, backing away. A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security stated that López-Vanegas used his vehicle as a potential weapon against the officer in his effort to avoid arrest.

According to the spokesperson, following established protocols, the officer responded defensively, shooting out the tires of the pickup to neutralize the threat. Thankfully, no injuries were reported, and López-Banegas was taken into ICE custody.

López-Vanegas has a history that includes drug trafficking, possession, and DUI offenses. A judge had ordered his removal back in 2021.

Jennifer Davenport, an Assistant Attorney General in New Jersey, mentioned that her office is reviewing the details surrounding this incident. She confirmed that her team is currently investigating an event involving ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO), where a firearm was discharged, although no injuries have been reported.

Local law enforcement was present, assisted by the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office and the Sheriff’s Office, and the Office of Public Integrity is taking on an independent investigation. Davenport also noted ongoing communications with various law enforcement partners at different levels.

This incident is part of a concerning trend, as the Department of Homeland Security has observed a significant rise—3,200%—in vehicle attacks while police officers attempt to apprehend criminal illegal aliens, alongside over a 1,300% increase in assaults on officers.
