UN Security Council Meeting on AI
On Wednesday, Dario Amodei, the CEO of Anthropic, is set to speak to the UN Security Council regarding the future and risks associated with artificial intelligence. He will join the meeting remotely, as noted in a schedule obtained by Bloomberg.
This month, Amodei urged tech companies to ease the rapid development of advanced AI models, a sentiment echoed by Sam Altman of OpenAI and Elon Musk of Tesla, but not shared by others like Mark Zuckerberg from Meta and Jensen Huang of Nvidia.
In response to calls for a slowdown in AI development, former President Trump expressed strong opposition through a post on Truth Social. He asserted that the only necessary control for AI is having a “strong and smart” president, implying that his administration had already put in place measures to regulate AI effectively.
Trump’s statement suggested a conspiracy against AI and data centers, claiming that the only beneficiaries of such a scenario would be China. He emphasized that whoever advances in AI will prevail globally, asserting that the U.S. is leading and will continue to do so.
Altman is confirmed to attend the council in person. Other participants include Yoshua Bengio, co-chair of the UN’s AI panel, and Clement Delangue, CEO of Hugging Face.
Additionally, DeepSeek, a Chinese AI developer, is also expected to have a representative at the meeting. Although Liang Wenfeng, DeepSeek’s founder, may not be attending in person, the presence of several Chinese AI firms, including Moonshot, signals an important participation in discussions about technology.
DeepSeek gained significant attention in early 2025 with its R1 reasoning model, which notably impacted U.S. tech stocks. This meeting marks a significant opportunity, as it’s the first time that a prominent Chinese AI developer has participated in a UN discussion alongside U.S. research labs.
Interestingly, amid simultaneous launches of powerful AI tools, industry leaders are also emphasizing the need for regulation. David Sacks noted that when figures like Amodei and Altman voice concerns over rapid development, their motives may not be purely altruistic; rather, they might be aiming to secure their dominance while sidestepping antitrust scrutiny—a notion that Trump seems to recognize.
