AI on your Android is becoming more dominant. Here’s how to get rid of it.

Google’s Gemini has been an optional feature on Android devices until now. Most of its capabilities have been accessible via a dedicated app or through Google Assistant, enabling it to respond to questions and perform tasks. However, that’s about to shift significantly, as Google gears up to phase out its traditional assistant in favor of a more AI-driven future—and it’s happening sooner than many might expect.

Gemini made its debut on Android back in early 2024, and since then, Google has been steadily integrating its AI features throughout the operating system. The newest iteration, known as Gemini Intelligence, seeks to enhance chatbots with more interactive agent-like abilities. Initially, users had to manually set Gemini as their default assistant in the Settings. Still, now, many new devices come equipped with Gemini as the default assistant straight from the start.

Although it can’t be removed entirely from your device, disabling its functions is an option.

If you’ve been dubious about using Gemini, you might have done well to steer clear, but the tide is shifting.

Beginning September 4, Google will start rolling out Gemini as the default personal assistant for all compatible Android devices (those running Android 9 or later with at least 2 GB of RAM). This transition will take a few weeks, so you won’t lose access to Google Assistant immediately. Nonetheless, once the update is complete, Gemini will take over as the default assistant on your phone—whether you want it to or not.

This change affects not just smartphones but all devices within Google’s ecosystem, including Android tablets, in-car systems using Android Auto, smartwatches with Wear OS, and TVs operating on Google TV or Android TV. Essentially, it’s going to be hard to avoid… unless you dig around in the settings.

How to remove Google Gemini as your digital assistant on Android

For those using a Samsung Galaxy device, you can disable Gemini by opening the Settings app, scrolling down to Apps, and selecting Choose default apps found at the top. Then, choose “Digital Assistant App” and either select a Google alternative or pick “None.” Afterward, when you try to summon your digital assistant, it won’t respond at all. The digital assistants will essentially vanish.

If you own a Google Pixel phone, open the Settings app and click on Apps. Then, go to Default apps, select Digital assistant apps, and finally choose “None” or another Google option. Congratulations—your phone is free from an AI-powered assistant.

If you have an Android device from a different brand like Motorola, OnePlus, or Nothing, the steps will be similar. You’ll just need to navigate to the default apps section in your settings and choose a digital assistant other than Google to get rid of Gemini.

How to remove Gemini from Android apps

Gemini is also incorporated into various popular apps like Gmail, Maps, and Drive, but it only operates when Personal Intelligence is activated. To disable it, open the Gemini app, go to Personal Intelligence, and then Connected Apps. Uncheck all the enabled apps and services listed. There are numerous integrations, so you may need to scroll down to deselect everything.

How to disable the Gemini app on Android

Having removed Gemini from its role as a digital assistant and eliminated it from Google apps, there’s one more step to consider.

Many newer devices, particularly from Samsung and Google, include the Gemini app installed by default, and you can’t remove this app entirely. Yet, you can disable its functions.

To do this, launch the app drawer and locate Gemini among the apps. Press and hold the app icon, then select the “i” icon to access “App Info.” Tap the Disable switch. Although a warning will pop up suggesting you reconsider, feel free to ignore it. After disabling the app, Gemini will cease to appear in your app drawer and will not function anymore.

Regaining Your Privacy from Gemini

As anticipated, extricating Gemini from your Android device can be challenging. Its presence is widespread and will likely increase as Google continues to ramp up its AI initiatives. However, if you prefer not to have Gemini involved with your phone or data, following these steps can help you reclaim your privacy and ease of mind.
