AI’s Impact on Film and Entertainment
Artificial Intelligence is becoming a game-changer in film production, particularly in special effects. It’s intriguing to see how much it’s being integrated into projects, especially just two years after a major strike in Hollywood. Despite the challenges, studios are diving into AI’s potential.
David Sacks, the White House AI and Crypto Czar, paints a somewhat bleak picture of AI’s role in culture by referencing iconic films like Terminator and Star Trek. He highlights that while AI can mimic human tasks, it lacks autonomy or feelings—it’s merely a tool to be supervised by humans.
After months of negotiation, SAG-AFTRA members secured a three-year contract with leading studios, focusing on wages and employment protections, and establishing what they call “AI Guardrails.” This aims to address some concerns around AI’s role in the industry.
Microsoft President, Brad Smith, noted that there’s a collective responsibility to navigate AI’s evolving landscape in the workplace. As AI’s role continues to grow, it seems essential for everyone involved to find a workable path forward.
Technology Partnerships Evolving
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences pondered whether films should disclose their use of AI. In the end, they decided against this transparency, stating that AI’s involvement won’t affect a film’s nomination chances.
Margarita Grubina from Respeecher points out that the conversation has shifted from whether to use AI to how effectively to leverage it. Her company utilizes AI to enhance vocal performances, as seen in films like A Brutal Person, where AI technology helped actors sound more authentic in Hungarian dialogues.
To achieve this, they trained AI models using native Hungarian speakers to accurately replicate accents and sounds. As Grubina explains, mastering such complex languages isn’t straightforward without the right sound dynamics.
AI in Action
The technology even helps actors appear younger or older for specific roles. In Netflix’s Pedro Paramo, AI visual effects were crucial for recreating youthfulness, showcasing the potential of modern tech in a way that wouldn’t have been possible years ago, as noted by Netflix’s co-CEO, Ted Sarandos.
Netflix recently employed AI technology in another project, El Eteranuta, to recreate environments in a futuristic Argentina. Drones and scanning technologies helped create realistic 3D models, marking a significant step in the use of AI-generated sequences.
Even after the SAG-AFTRA agreement, concerns persisted. Some actors still voiced that protections regarding AI were insufficient, especially regarding motion capture actors being treated as mere data instead of performers.
Ultimately, Gregory Allen from the Wadwani AI Center acknowledges the significant presence of AI in today’s economy. It’s clear that as technology improves, so will its implications on the workplace, necessitating a thoughtful approach to its integration.
