Former Staffer to Massachusetts Governor Charged with Drug Trafficking
Lamar Cook, who previously worked for Democratic Governor Maura Healey in Massachusetts, has been arrested and faces drug trafficking charges. This follows an incident where a cocaine delivery destined for Cook’s workplace was intercepted.
At 45, Cook has held the position of president of Healey’s Western Massachusetts office since April 2023. His past roles include being on the Hospitality and Tourism Board Management Committee. He attempted to run for Springfield City Council in 2015 and the School Committee in 2017 but was not successful.
On Wednesday, Cook entered a plea of not guilty and was ordered to be held without bail. He also faces charges related to the unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.
A representative from the governor’s office commented on the situation, stating Cook was fired immediately upon the announcement of his arrest. They added that such actions compromise public trust and emphasized their support for the ongoing criminal investigation.
“The actions that occurred here are unacceptable and a serious breach of public trust,” the spokesperson mentioned. “This criminal investigation is ongoing, and our administration intends to work with law enforcement to assist in the investigation.”
According to Hampden County District Attorney Anthony Galluni, state police seized two packages of cocaine intended for Cook at the state government building, known locally as the “mini statehouse.” The first package, discovered on October 10, weighed in at 13 kilograms (more than 28 pounds), while the second package brought the total to 21 kilograms (46 pounds).
Cook was arrested during a traffic stop Tuesday night in Springfield and appeared in court for his arraignment, wearing handcuffs and a varsity-style jacket.
He is set to remain at Hampden County Jail until a dangerousness hearing determines whether he should be held without bail for up to 120 days. If released after the hearing scheduled for Friday morning, he will need to post a $25,000 bail as set by Judge William Rota.
“Mr. Cook, you will be our guest for a few days, but you will have a full and complete hearing on Friday,” Judge Rota remarked.
In summary, this sudden turn of events raises serious questions about the integrity of public officials and the implications of such actions for the community.
