Air Force cancels 135 technical sergeant promotions due to exam scoring error

Air Force Rescinds Promotions Due to Scoring Error

Over 100 Air Force aviators have had their promotions revoked following a mistake in the scoring of a key exam. This year, the process has taken an unexpected turn, and officials have acknowledged that this incident will be tough for everyone involved.

The error stemmed from the use of outdated answer keys for the Professional Knowledge Test, which is critical for determining promotions in the security forces career field. This was revealed by Air Force officials on Tuesday.

This mishap led to the cancellation of 135 promotions that would have elevated service members to the rank of sergeant. Those positions will now be filled by others who met the updated criteria.

“We owe it to those affected to take immediate action,” stated Chief Petty Officer David R. Wolf from the Air Force. “This will be a difficult situation for everyone affected.”

The issue came to light after the promotion list was already released. Personnel from the Air Force found that the incorrect scoring key had been applied.

Upon rescoring all 2,285 eligible exams, officials found that 135 Airmen initially deemed worthy of promotion no longer met the required score.

Interestingly, another 135 airmen who had previously been overlooked will be promoted instead.

A technical sergeant is a mid-level noncommissioned officer rank. Promotions in the Air Force typically rely on various criteria, including performance, time in service, and test scores.

After the rescoring, 451 out of the 586 original selections maintained their promotions. The total count of promotions, however, stayed the same.

The Air Force characterized this mix-up as an isolated incident that was unprecedented, affecting only those in the security forces field.

Officials indicated they carefully reviewed the correct answer keys alongside subject matter experts before the rescoring process.

“We promote Airmen based on merit as established by federal law and policy,” noted Lt. Gen. Jefferson O’Donnell, the Air Force’s deputy chief of staff for personnel and services.

“Integrity is essential in a merit-based promotion system,” he added.

The Air Force Personnel Center plans to announce 135 newly selected technical sergeants in a supplementary release scheduled for the week of July 13.

To minimize delays in promotion, officials said these newly selected airmen will receive adjusted line numbers.

Military leaders have already reached out to inform affected individuals, established a hotline for inquiries, and are strengthening procedures to investigate how the error occurred.

It’s important to note that the promotion failure was attributed to human error, not artificial intelligence.

This situation follows other notable incidents regarding testing in the Air Force. For instance, last year, nearly 100 cadets were surveyed for possible cheating during routine knowledge tests.

In 2021, there were allegations involving around 250 cadets, resulting in a comprehensive review of honor code violations at the academy.
