Maine Democrats organizing convention to select next candidate after Graham Platner withdraws from Senate race due to scandal.

The Maine Democratic Party decided on Wednesday to organize a convention following the announcement by Democrat Graham Platner that he is stepping back from the state Senate race. This announcement came after he faced allegations of sexual assault from his ex-girlfriend.

While Platner denies the accusations, he faced significant pressure from party members to withdraw. He is also accused of attempting to influence his successor’s selection, a claim he also denies.

His departure puts the upcoming U.S. Senate race into uncertainty with just a few months remaining before the November midterm elections. The Maine Democratic Party is mandated by law to find a replacement and has decided to initiate a nominating convention to identify a new candidate. Meanwhile, there are already whispers of interest from potential replacements.

Time is of the essence

According to Maine law, the process for replacing candidates ahead of a general election is quite strict. Platner had until July 13 at 5 p.m. to resign, after which the Democratic Party could begin considering other candidates.

Once he officially resigns, the Maine Democratic Party needs to name a replacement by July 27.

In an emergency meeting held on Wednesday, the state Democratic Party agreed to proceed with a nominating convention, provided that more than 100 state committee positions become available.

Leaders from the party noted a “remarkable amount of energy and enthusiasm” stemming from the support for Platner’s campaign, driven by countless volunteers and supporters.

It’s quite unusual for a candidate to withdraw from a general election, both in Maine and beyond, and now party officials are racing to finalize their plans.

Claiming no influence over the process

A key concern is how much sway Platner will have in choosing his replacement.

The Executive Director of the Maine Democratic Party accused Platner’s campaign of trying to improperly influence the nomination process.

In response, Platner’s team maintained that they have not attempted any such influence, instead focusing on understanding how the process will unfold. They highlighted that thousands of Maine residents had rallied behind Platner, a progressive candidate who had previously outlasted establishment-friendly politicians.

The back-and-forth between Platner’s team and the party persisted, with the party stressing its commitment to ensuring an open and inclusive process for selecting a new candidate, especially should the need arise for further changes.

On the same note, Platner’s campaign reached out to supporters for feedback via a survey with a two-day response deadline.

On a different front, President Donald Trump weighed in on the situation, suggesting that the allegations create a challenging predicament for Platner.

The response to the allegations

Trump commented on the accusations facing Platner, casting doubt on the credibility of the claims. He said, “It’s a tough situation they’re in. You wonder who to believe.” He added that the political fallout could potentially lead to Platner’s loss in the upcoming election.

Potential replacements are emerging

Nirav Shah, a former director at the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention, indicated he is thinking about entering the race and has been in touch with the party regarding a transparent succession process.

Another possible candidate is Troy Jackson, the former Maine Senate President, who is seeking to form a Senate committee. There’s also Jordan Wood, a former Senate candidate, who is in discussions about joining the race.

Others mentioned as potential candidates include the current Secretary of State Shena Bellows, Dan Kleban, founder of Maine Beer Company, and Hannah Pingree, who is running for governor.

However, certain names, such as actor Patrick Dempsey, have made it clear they are not interested in running.

A sense of disillusionment

The unfolding situation has left many of Platner’s supporters feeling disillusioned. This week, they voiced their disappointment over the allegations and contemplated the next steps.

Some community members are calling for Platner’s removal from consideration altogether.

Paul Attardo, a resident, shared his change of heart regarding his support, saying the accusations were “regrettable” and “genuine.” He believes the party should initiate the search for a replacement.

Attardo likened the current scenario to the swift replacement of Joe Biden during the 2024 campaign, noting that both situations seem oddly familiar.
