Airbnb banning indoor security cameras

Airbnb will begin banning indoor surveillance cameras at all of its properties around the world starting late next month, the company announced Monday.

The company said its goal with the policy changes is to “simplify our security camera policies” while “prioritizing community privacy.”

The company said the revised policy was also the result of “extensive consultation” with guests, hosts, privacy experts and advocacy groups.

“Our goal was to create new, clear rules that provide more clarity on what our community can expect on Airbnb,” Juniper Downs, Airbnb’s head of community policy and partnerships, said in a statement. I mentioned it in the.

Previously, security cameras were only allowed in certain indoor areas, provided they were clearly visible and made clear on the property page prior to booking. Cameras were prohibited in bedrooms and bathrooms, but cameras were allowed in hallways and living rooms. Currently, Airbnb bans all cameras “regardless of location.”

Airbnb has also revised its policy regarding outdoor surveillance cameras. Doorbell cameras and other outdoor security devices are permitted but must be disclosed before guests book your listing. Outdoor cameras will also not be allowed to monitor areas “where there is a greater expectation of privacy, such as outdoor showers or saunas.”

Noise decibel monitors are permitted in common areas. The devices monitor noise levels, which can be a useful tool to thwart problems such as unauthorized parties, but do not record audio or conversations, according to the announcement.

The company said in its announcement that it does not expect the updated rules to have a major impact, noting that most properties do not report the installation of surveillance cameras. Still, the company announced that the policy will go into effect by April 30 to give hosts time to make the necessary changes.
