Finnair announced this week that it will begin asking passengers to voluntarily weigh their weight and carry-on baggage before takeoff, in an effort to collect cargo data on its aircraft.

The Finnish airline said passenger weight information will be kept anonymous and will be used to “optimize Finnair’s current aircraft balance calculations.”

The airline says weighing passengers helps ensure the plane does not exceed its weight limit.

The company also said it does not use customers’ personal data.

Satu Munukka, Finnair’s head of ground processes, said in a statement: “We use metrological data to perform average calculations necessary for the safe operation of our flights, and the data collected is combined with our customers’ personal data. are not associated in any way.”

Anuka also claimed that airlines do not ask for the names or reservation numbers of passengers who wish to be weighed.

European airlines use average passenger weights calculated by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency, which reveals that the average weight for men is 181.22 pounds and the average weight for women is 148.8 pounds.

Meanwhile, 42% of the U.S. population over the age of 20 is considered obese as of 2020, according to the latest data. But going back to the 1960s, that number was only 10%.

Several domestic airlines, including American Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, Frontier Airlines, Spirit Airlines and United Airlines, require customers who cannot fit in one seat to purchase another ticket.
