Tragic Loss of Airman at Vandenberg Space Force Base

A 23-year-old airman from North Carolina tragically lost his life in a heavy machinery accident at Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, as confirmed by authorities on Friday.

The airman was identified as 1st Class Cedric Enerna, serving in the Paving and Equipment Flight of the 30th Civil Engineering Squadron. This unit takes care of essential infrastructure, including the roads and airfields that facilitate operations at the base, which are crucial for satellite launches and missile tests.

Reports indicate that Enerna was operating heavy machinery when he fell from an embankment. Thankfully, no other personnel were harmed in the incident.

The base expressed its condolences, stating, “We share our deep sorrow at the loss of Airman 1st Class Cedric Enerna.” They praised his honor, humility, and commitment to his mission, noting that his absence will be sorely felt across the Vandenberg community.

The Santa Barbara County Coroner’s Office is still working to determine the official cause of death, with the unit collaborating with the Safety Investigation Board to look into the situation further.

Originally from Fayetteville, North Carolina, Enerna also spent part of his early years in the Philippines. He enlisted on March 5, 2024, and reported to Vandenberg later that year, joining a team often referred to as the “Dirt Boys,” which specializes in paving and heavy equipment operations.

While at Vandenberg, Enerna earned the respect of his peers through his positive demeanor and strong work ethic. Col. James T. Horn III, the commander of Space Launch Delta 30, remarked on Enerna’s admirable character and the genuine concern he showed for others.

It was noted by Lt. Col. Seth Paulsen, Enerna’s squadron commander, that he truly epitomized what it means to be an airman, always ready to work and lend a hand with a cheerful attitude.
