Iran’s Response to US Strikes on Nuclear Facilities

After a recent stealth operation by the US that targeted three critical Iranian nuclear sites, there’s speculation that Iran might look to retaliate. However, experts on Middle Eastern and US national security believe the Iranian administration lacks the capability for any significant escalation.

Jacob Oridort, who leads the American Security Center at the American First Policy Institute, noted that while Iran is indeed making a lot of noise, it might only result in minor actions directed at the US. He anticipates that, in an effort to preserve dignity, Iran could resort to cyberattacks or strike regional infrastructure.

Since the US’s Midnight Hammer operation, Iran has fired more missiles into Israel. This has followed a series of attacks that injured numerous individuals in Israel.

Oridort mentioned he doesn’t foresee any major escalation from Iran. This isn’t due to a lack of desire on their part, but rather their inability to respond vigorously, particularly after Israel’s recent airstrikes, which aimed at Iranian nuclear and missile facilities and reportedly resulted in the deaths of several Iranian military leaders.

In the aftermath of these attacks, Iran declared that it considers the era of diplomacy over, asserting its right to self-defense. Meanwhile, President Trump emphasized that, right now, there is an opportunity for peace.

Looking at Iran’s significant proxy power in the region, Oridort pointed out that it was telling how none of these proxies rushed to Iran’s aid following the US strike, a potential sign of Iran’s diminishing influence.

Oridort believes the repercussions of the US’s actions on Iran’s nuclear ambitions could lead to a considerable setback for the regime. He remarked that prior to these strikes, Israel had already diminished many of Iran’s capabilities and had likely disrupted its nuclear program for the next two to three years.

He posited that the recent US strike might now delay Iran’s nuclear development by over a decade. However, he cautioned that this timeline heavily depends on forthcoming negotiations and actions between the US and Iran.

On Saturday, the US conducted a surprise operation employing B-2 stealth bombers targeting facilities in Ford, Natanz, and Isfahan. General Dan Kane from the Co-State Chief of Staff stated that assessing the complete damage inflicted on these sites would take some time.

As of now, it’s uncertain whether the enriched nuclear material was destroyed during the US strikes or if Iran had preemptively moved it out of harm’s way.
