AirTag hidden in Bible leads pregnant carjacking victim to stolen vehicle

Don’t steal a car with a tracking device.

A Tennessee woman who was three months pregnant was carjacked at gunpoint after a crash, but was able to track the stolen vehicle using an Apple AirTag device she had hidden inside a Bible.

Zarya Hughes was heading to a local barbecue place in Memphis when a white Nissan sped up and crashed into the passenger side of her Hyundai Sonata at an intersection, police said. told WREG.

“When they hit me, the man in the black mask was already pointing a gun at me from the car,” she said.

She tried to drive into a nearby fire station, but the attackers blocked her car and forced her out while pointing a gun at her in front of three firefighters. .

“All I did was get out of the car. I didn’t want to risk my life and I already knew there was a tracking device on the car,” the cosmetology student said.

The tracking device, an Apple AirTag, was hidden inside a Bible she kept in her car.

“I keep an air tag in my Bible because I think, ‘If someone breaks into my car, they won’t steal my Bible,'” Hughes told the magazine.

After speaking with police at the scene, she received a phone notification in the middle of the night that her Airtage was at a nearby apartment complex.

She reported the vehicle’s location to the police and was overjoyed to wake up and see the location of the AirTag, which had been towed away at a city detention center.

The car thieves tore out the rearview mirror to disable the BlueLink car detection system, but Hughes said it wasn’t working anyway. She can’t drive her car because they still have her only keys.

Damage from collisions and theft would cost hundreds of dollars to replace, she said.

No arrests have been made, police told the media.
