AJ Dillon Becomes a Fan of WNBA’s Sophie Cunningham
AJ Dillon, like many sports enthusiasts these days, finds himself captivated by the WNBA, though not exactly because of superstar Caitlin Clark. It’s actually one of Clark’s teammates, Sophie Cunningham, who has Dillon glued to his TV.
In a recent chat, Dillon recalled an incident during a game where Cunningham went to defend Clark after she was fouled early on. He described his own foul—an unfortunate moment that turned into a bit of a boredom break, noting how “some fans are just jumping on the bandwagon now.”
While discussing this on a podcast with his brother-in-law, Dillon mentioned he planned to buy a Cunningham jersey. They seem hard to get, but he excitedly confirmed he got one and shared his purchase on social media.
Dillon expressed newfound admiration for Cunningham, even dubbing her his “new favorite” for taking charge in protecting their team’s top player.
“Caitlin Clark is obviously the standout on that team, arguably the best player in the WNBA,” Dillon remarked. “It’s like having a quarterback—you have to make sure they’re protected.”
Dillon also shared that he’s looking forward to showing off his new jersey on July 4th. “I’m just a fan,” he said with a smile. “I love the way she plays; she’s tough and does her part to keep everyone strong and together.”
This whole situation unfolded recently when Connecticut Sun guard Jacee Sheldon found herself on the floor, allegedly due to a shove from Marina Mabrey. In the midst of the play, Cunningham ended up committing a hard foul that led to ejections for both her and Sheldon.
Reflecting on the incident, Cunningham commented on the lack of protection the league offers its star players. “It’s all part of the game, I suppose,” she noted, adding that she’s committed to defending her teammates regardless of the circumstances.
