Al Green, a Democrat, introduces impeachment article against Trump regarding Iran strikes

Rep. Al Green Submits Article of Impeachment Against Trump

On Tuesday, Rep. Al Green (D-TX) introduced an article of impeachment against President Donald Trump for launching attacks on Iran’s nuclear facilities without Congressional approval.

The resolution, titled “The President’s Abuse of Power by Ignoring Separation of Power,” argues that Trump’s actions undermine American democracy and violate constitutional protocols regarding war declarations.

Green stated, “If there was no imminent threat to the United States, then Trump’s unilateral decision to use force constitutes abuse of power, as it lacked both Congressional consent and proper notification.” He emphasized that allowing this kind of executive action leads to authoritarianism, a serious concern for democracy.

According to Article 1 of the Constitution, only Congress has the authority to declare war. This raises significant issues, as both Democratic and Republican presidents have engaged in military actions without formal Congressional backing.

Green characterized Trump as an “authoritarian president,” suggesting that his actions pose a threat to democratic values. He has previously condemned Trump for various issues, including his immigration policies and actions surrounding the January 6 protests.

Green expressed his frustration by saying, “I didn’t come to Congress to remain passive. The president’s abuse of power risks shifting American democracy towards authoritarianism.”

He also made a strong statement: “The President has no right to engage our country in war without the people’s representatives’ approval.”

In defense of Trump’s actions, White House spokesman Taylor Rogers remarked that the President’s strategy of “peace by force” has achieved what past leaders could not. He claimed that Trump’s approach has successfully dismantled Iran’s nuclear ambitions and established a ceasefire.

Rogers further noted, “Eliminating the chances of nuclear conflict is a significant, nonpartisan achievement that should be recognized as a historic moment for the U.S., the Middle East, and the world.”
