Thousands of voters in Alabama’s new congressional district received incorrect voting instructions leading up to Super Tuesday.

More than 6,500 voters in Alabama’s 2nd Congressional District received postcards with information for voters in the 7th Congressional District ahead of Tuesday’s primary election.

The county sent out 2,000 notices informing affected voters of the error on Tuesday, and another 4,000 on Wednesday.

Montgomery County Board of Registration Chairman James Snipes said affected voters can still vote for candidates.

“Everyone who came to the precinct was able to vote for the correct candidate,” Snipes said. “This was an honest effort.”

He blamed the error on a “software glitch” that misidentified the geographic region of thousands of voters.

The boundaries of the 2nd Congressional District were redrawn last year by a federal judge who ruled that the previous boundaries could violate the Voting Rights Act.

The new border was redrawn from Mobile to the Georgia border, giving blacks, who make up 27% of the population, more influence in elections.

The election was a crowded one, with 11 Democrats and seven Republicans entering the primary.

Democratic candidates Anthony Daniels and Shomali Figures received enough votes to qualify for a runoff later this year.

Republican candidates Caroleen Dobson and Dick Brewbaker similarly secured spots in the runoff elections that will determine the future party nominee.
