Alabama man kidnaps woman, forces her to ‘marry’ him: police

An Alabama man is behind bars on suspicion of kidnapping and sexually assaulting a woman while pretending to be married, police said.

Roy Lee Crowder, 37, was charged with first-degree sexual abuse, first-degree kidnapping and first-degree robbery, according to Mobile County Metro Jail records.

The Mobile County Sheriff's Office tells FOX10 News the incident began when the victim was recently driving on Alabama 188 when she saw Crowder in the middle of the road.

When the woman stopped, the suspect pulled out a gun and forced her into the passenger seat, police said.

Crowder, who was said to have been under the influence of drugs at the time, then took the couple to a church for a “makeshift wedding”.

“At one point, they stopped at a church and had them recite their wedding vows as if they were married,” Mobile County Sheriff Paul Birch told FOX10 News.

The suspect then allegedly sexually assaulted the victim and drove her around Mobile County, FOX10 reported.

Birch told local news outlets that the victim remained calm and remembered the location during the kidnapping. She also videotaped the “wedding” for later viewing to law enforcement.

After the kidnapping, the woman's family realized she was missing and called police, the sheriff said. Crowder released her after being contacted by police.
