An Alabama mother reportedly ran her 7-year-old son over with her car after letting him walk home from school as punishment. Independent.
Sarai Rachel James, 27, reportedly picked up her son from school on February 9 and was told by the principal that her son had misbehaved in class. She stopped her car a short distance from the school and told her son to get out of her car and walk the rest of the way home. The distance between the school and the boy’s home was about eight blocks, according to the report.
The boy was walking or jogging while his mother drove behind him with flashers on. After the boy ran a few blocks, the girl slowed down and the child reached for the door handle to get back into the car. However, James suddenly accelerated and pulled the boy under the car. Police say the boy was hit by his rear tire. miami herald. The boy was immediately taken to Birmingham hospital where he was treated for abrasions on his back and side of the head.
Boaz Police Chief Michael Abercrombie said, “It’s a miracle he wasn’t injured more than expected.”
“She may not have known he was doing that,” Abercrombie said. “God was watching over him,” he added.
Investigators said the mother did not intend to run the boy over, but believe it was punishment for the boy’s severe injuries in the end. As a result, James was charged with aggravated child abuse. She was released on $50,000 bail, but it is unclear whether she hired an attorney in this case.
James reportedly has no contact with his son. It is not clear who the boy has been with since the incident.
A 53-year-old woman was also a passenger in the accident. The report did not reveal who the woman was or whether she had any relationship with the boy. She was charged with endangering the welfare of a child and was eventually released on $500 bond.
It is unclear what kind of trouble the boy got into at school that motivated his mother to carry out the punishment.
