Alabama resident Jeremy Wayne Shoemaker taken into custody for making armed threats against synagogues

Arrest Made in Connection with Threats Against Alabama Synagogues

The Clark County Sheriff’s Office in Grove Hill, Alabama, reported on Tuesday the arrest of Jeremy Wayne Shoemaker the previous night, following credible threats of violence aimed at several synagogues in Alabama and neighboring states.

“Violence was likely prevented before it could happen,” the sheriff’s office stated, adding that a search warrant was executed, leading to Shoemaker’s capture at his home in Needham, Alabama.

According to reports, “the subjects were taken into custody with firearms and more than just suitcases filled with ammunition, bulletproof vests, and various items linked to the violent plot.” Further investigations indicated that Shoemaker may have planned to avoid arrest and could have been targeting public figures as well.

The sheriff’s office noted that “numerous” federal agencies are involved in the investigation, and “multiple federal charges might follow.” Locally, he faces charges of resisting arrest and other offenses.

FBI Mobile Public Affairs Specialist Tommy Loftis mentioned that Shoemaker is currently held in the county jail facing state charges.

Local Sheriff Dwayne Smith emphasized the importance of cooperation among agencies, stating that proactive efforts can prevent tragic incidents that often leave communities wondering how such events weren’t stopped.

The Birmingham Jewish Federation commented that “there is no credible threat to our community at this time” and expressed gratitude for the rapid response from the FBI and local law enforcement, which averted a potential tragedy. They also noted that this incident should not be overlooked as it reflects ongoing threats driven by anti-Semitism and hatred. However, it also showcases the effectiveness of collaborative vigilance and preparedness.
