Alan Ritchson Shares Personal Story of Struggle

Alan Ritchson recently opened up about a challenging time in his life that he says led to significant mental health struggles.

The “Reacher” star revealed that a former business partner had threatened to falsely accuse him of rape if he didn’t meet her at a hotel in Cannes, France. This intimidation left him feeling anxious and depressed.

“I’m a suicide survivor,” he shared during a recent event at FAN EXPO Canada.

Ritchson recounted that he was in his mid-30s and facing depression for the first time. He felt this way not because he hadn’t achieved success—he had—but due to a fallout with a business partner who issued threats. She insisted he meet her at the Hotel du Cap in Cannes, claiming she would ruin his life by telling TMZ that he assaulted her if he refused. It felt like a clear case of blackmail.

“I was like, ‘No, I’m not doing that,'” he said, emphasizing his decision to resist her demands.

Although he did not disclose her identity, Ritchson took legal action against the intimidation. He described the fallout from the situation as severe, ultimately resulting in a settlement that still left him feeling he had lost something far more precious—his peace of mind.

“I lost everything in that relationship; she was a billionaire, and she tanked every bit of our business,” he explained. The pressure of the potential fallout loomed over him, and despite winning a settlement, he felt empty, burdened by the uncertainty that came with doing the right thing.

Ritchson expressed feelings of helplessness, noting that he felt utterly broken. The ordeal left him contemplating the idea that it might be a relief to his family if he were no longer there to deal with the aftermath.

These candid comments come at a time when Ritchson is also navigating changes in his personal life. He recently announced the end of his 20-year marriage to his wife, Catherine.

Earlier this month, the couple shared through an Instagram post that they had decided to part ways but would continue to support each other in different capacities. They first crossed paths as teenagers and were later married on May 12, 2006. Together, they have three sons: Calem, Edan, and Amory.

Ritchson is known for various roles, including performances in “Smallville,” “Blue Mountain State,” “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire,” and “Titans.” His portrayal of the title character in “Reacher,” which premiered in 2022, helped solidify his status as a leading action star in Hollywood.
