Search for Nancy Guthrie Enters Its 20th Day with New Ransom Demand
The manhunt for Nancy Guthrie extended into its 20th day on Friday, marked by a troubling new ransom message that includes ominous threats if the demand isn’t fulfilled.
This week, entertainment news outlet TMZ reported receiving a fresh ransom demand. This new message, it seems, outlines “sophisticated requirements involving cryptocurrencies beyond just IT Coin,” and has been handed over to the FBI for investigation.
According to TMZ, the latest email requests a ransom amount similar to the previously stated $6 million, issued shortly after her kidnapping. The message also describes potential consequences if the payment isn’t made.
Interestingly, the account number for the cryptocurrency differs from the original one provided in earlier communications, the outlet noted.
Nancy Guthrie, 84 and the mother of NBC’s Savannah Guthrie, vanished in the early hours of February 1. She was reported missing later that day after not appearing at a friend’s home for a virtual church service. While law enforcement officials have followed various leads and tips, they have yet to identify a suspect.
One significant clue remains a doorbell video, which captured a masked individual on a porch at night, wearing gloves and carrying a backpack, right before disabling the camera. Unfortunately, there is no other known footage of Guthrie from that evening.
A glove found two miles from her home, which generated considerable discussion, did not provide the breakthrough investigators had hoped for. The FBI indicated that DNA testing on the glove did not match samples from the crime scene or from CODIS, the National DNA Database.
NewsNation’s Brian Entin shared that the FBI plans to utilize investigative genetic genealogy techniques going forward. This involves comparing unidentified DNA from the scene against profiles in public ancestry databases to potentially identify relatives and narrow down suspects. However, such methods can often take weeks or even months to yield results. This approach has previously helped to identify individuals, including Brian Koberger in the 2022 University of Idaho student murders.
The FBI has also provided a description of the suspect in Nancy Guthrie’s kidnapping. He is believed to be around 5-foot-9 to 5-foot-10 tall with a medium build, and was last seen carrying a black 25-liter Ozark Trail Hiker Pack backpack, which is sold exclusively at Walmart.
In a related development, the reward for information leading to her kidnapper has been raised to $200,000. Anyone with information is urged to contact the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI.
