Alaska housefire kills 1 woman, 5 children

Alaska State Police said Thursday that a woman and five children were killed in a house fire in a small village in northwest Alaska.

The six bodies were recovered from their home in Norvik, an Inupiat community of about 650 people located more than 500 miles (800 kilometers) northwest of Anchorage. Police spokesman Tim DeSpain said in an email that the children authorities believe were killed ranged in age from 9 to 16.

He said no additional information about the victim will be available until the state medical examiner's office in Anchorage completes identification of the victim.

DeSpain said village residents became aware of the fire around 6 a.m. Wednesday after returning to Anchorage and conferring with the deputy fire marshal. “Water was used to try to extinguish the fire, but it was already fully burned and too hot to attempt a rescue,” Despain said in an email.

Police said the fire appears to have started near a stove that was reportedly in poor condition. However, police said the cause of the fire was still under investigation.

The victim's name has not been released. Officers said they were still notifying relatives.
