Alaska Rep. Mary Peltola will be absent from House floor to prepare fish for winter storage

Rep. Mary Peltola (D-Alaska) will not attend this week’s House vote to prepare fish for her family.

“This week, Congresswoman Peltola will be traveling with her family around the state to pack freezers with fish for the winter. Mary’s family, and her late husband’s family, rely on her to some extent for their livelihoods,” her office said in a statement.

“Rep. Peltola will submit a public statement to the Congressional Record reflecting how he would have voted had he been present,” the statement added.

Her office said she stored fish for her family each summer in preparation for winter. Peltola also posted a photo. She posted about her fishing adventures on social media platform X, highlighting the importance of fishing in Alaska.

“There’s nothing like being out on the water, and one of the reasons I’m committed to fisheries policy is because I know how essential the ability to rely on Alaska’s fisheries has been and will continue to be to all Alaskans,” she wrote to X.

“Together we will protect our fisheries not only for the communities that depend on them today, but also for future generations to experience and make memories from,” she added.

Peltola’s husband, Eugene Peltola Jr., died in a plane crash in Alaska last September. Peltola has been serving in Congress since winning an unexpected victory in the heavily Republican state in the 2022 election.
