Fox Business has reported on plans regarding a prison in San Francisco.
Recently, former President Donald Trump announced that he is instructing federal agencies to consider reopening the infamous Alcatraz prison. This facility, which closed over 60 years ago, is now a museum and a popular tourist spot in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Alcatraz, the highest security federal prison, opened its doors in 1934. Nestled 1.25 miles off the coast, it was viewed as virtually escape-proof, largely due to the treacherous currents in the bay and waters known to have sharks. It housed notorious criminals like Al Capone and was the site of a famous escape that inspired the 1979 movie “Escape from Alcatraz.”

The prison was officially closed in 1963. Before its shutdown, the Bureau of Prisons noted that keeping Alcatraz operational was far more expensive than other prisons; in fact, its daily operating cost was over three times that of facilities like Atlanta. In 1959, it cost about $10.10 per inmate, compared to just $3 in Atlanta.
These high expenses stemmed from the harsh marine environment, which caused considerable damage to the prison’s infrastructure. Additionally, all supplies like food, fuel, and water had to be transported by boat, leading to millions in deferred maintenance costs.
In 1972, management of Alcatraz was transferred to the National Park Service and transformed into a tourist attraction. This shift has proven lucrative, with the site bringing in tens of millions of dollars annually.
According to reports, Alcatraz now attracts around 1.6 million visitors each year, generating about $60 million in revenue, much of which is funneled back into park projects.
The National Park Service is also overseeing a $40 million renovation of Alcatraz, particularly focusing on an area that has not been updated since its construction in 1939, with plans to complete the work by the end of the year.
As a designated national historic landmark since 1986, Alcatraz remains a significant part of American history.
In a recent social media post, Trump emphasized that he is urging federal agencies to “rebuild and open Alcatraz,” reflecting his views on crime. He stated, “For too long, America has been plagued by dangerous, repeat offenders. In earlier times, we didn’t hesitate to lock up the most harmful criminals.” He further directed the Bureau of Prisons, alongside the Department of Justice and Homeland Security, to begin a significant expansion and renovation of the facility to accommodate some of the most notorious offenders in the country.
