Alcohol maker stocks see declines in wake of Surgeon General cancer advisory

It's been a rocky morning for popular alcohol producers as investors react to the U.S. Surgeon General's recommendations on alcohol and cancer.

As of early Friday afternoon, Molson Coors stock had fallen 2.86% from the open. Anheuser-Busch InBev fell about 2.04%.

These two big producers weren't alone.

Shares of Boston Beer Company, which owns brands such as Samuel Adams and Twisted Tea, fell 1.88%. Brown-Forman, known for brands such as Jack Daniel's and Woodford Reserve, fell about 1.26%.

Constellation Brands is trading at $220.54, down 0.93% from the start of the day.

This followed recommendations from Surgeon General Dr Vivek Murthy about a “direct link” between alcohol and increased cancer risk.

Alcohol linked to cancer risk in the U.S., new recommendations from the Surgeon General

The advisory, released Friday morning, said alcohol consumption is “the third leading cause of preventable cancer in the United States.”

Scientific evidence shows a causal relationship between alcohol use and an increased risk of at least seven types of cancer, including breast (female), colorectal, esophagus, liver, mouth (oral cavity), throat (pharynx), and voice box. (larynx),” the advisory also states.

Murthy proposed several actions that could help “start reducing alcohol-related cancers” in the United States. The recommendations include adding cancer risk warnings to the Surgeon General's alcohol warning labels, increasing risk education, and reevaluating “recommended limits for alcohol consumption.” It is said to be included.

The currently required Surgeon General's label reads: “Government Warning: (1) According to the Surgeon General, women should not drink alcoholic beverages during pregnancy due to the risk of birth defects.'' ( 2) Consumption of alcoholic beverages impairs your ability to drive a motor vehicle. Driving a car or operating machinery can cause health problems. ”

The power to update labels rests with Congress.

“This advisory raises awareness of alcohol's cancer risks and sets out steps we can all take to minimize harm,” Murthy said in a statement.

According to the advisory, about 45% of Americans knew that alcohol poses a cancer risk.

Gallup reported in august Among Americans who drink alcohol, 34% say they drink beer “most often.” Meanwhile, a third said they preferred wine.

According to Gallup, about 29% of Americans who drink alcohol report that their most frequent drink is booze.
