Alec Burks giving ailing Knicks some much-needed depth scoring

Alec Burks, who played 0 minutes in the first round against the 76ers and barely played in the final week of the regular season, is suddenly finding a significant role with the Knicks.

With several injured regulars out, the veteran guard contributed 18 points off the bench in the Knicks’ 121-91 win over the Pacers in Game 5, making a major contribution to the Knicks’ third consecutive appearance.

“He gave us a ton of minutes in this series,” Josh Hart said. “He’s a true professional and someone who’s always ready. I see him working hard every day and getting his shots up. That’s what pros do.

“Even when he’s not in the rotation, they keep getting better, they keep getting ready. When his number is called, he comes out and gives us what we need when we desperately need him. He is a true professional and we will continue to rely on him.”

Burks was traded by the Pistons in February and was dropped from Tom Thibodeau’s rotation late in the regular season after shooting just 30.7 percent in 23 games.

The 13-year NBA veteran had made one field goal attempt since March 31 before serving out in the past three games against the Pacers.

“I said he’s the ultimate professional,” Thibodeau said. “He’s a combo guard, he can shoot, he can put it on the floor, he has the experience, he can think on his feet.

“All of those things are valuable, especially in a playoff situation. So I’m not surprised. He’s had a great career and I think he still has a lot left in him.”

“Whether I was playing or not, it was really good to win. I’m really happy to win,” Burks said. “Be prepared, you never know. Mr. Tis always tells me, everyone tells me just be prepared.

“Just stay in shape, stay ready, stay in rhythm. No matter when I shoot, I’m confident in my ability. …But I’m glad I won, that’s the most exciting thing.”
