California Lawmakers Use Drones to Disarm Wanted Parolees
Sacramento County deputies recently innovated during a standoff by using a drone equipped with a strong magnet to disarm a wanted parolee hiding in a messy garage. Sergeant Edward Igoe from the Sacramento Sheriff’s Office referred to this approach as a “once in a lifetime opportunity.” It’s a creative measure that prioritizes officer safety, particularly when dealing with sex offenders who have violent backgrounds.
Colombians Arrested After Carjacking Alert
In a separate incident, two Colombian nationals were taken into custody in California after an automatic license plate reader notified authorities about a stolen Mercedes-Benz linked to a violent carjacking from a few days prior.
The Mercedes-Benz C300 had been reported stolen during a carjacking in Hawthorne, California, on July 11. A few days afterward, deputies received a notification that the vehicle was spotted in Rolling Hills Estates. Upon investigation, they found it was also tied to a recent home burglary in Torrance.
Authorities conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle near Palos Verdes Drive North and Rolling Vista Drive. As soon as the car came to a halt, the passenger dashed out and attempted to flee, leading deputies to establish a perimeter.
The driver, identified as 26-year-old Yarett Pedraza from Bogotá, was arrested at the scene. The search quickly escalated to involve aerial support, with deputies and a LASD blimp assisting. Before long, the passenger was located and taken into custody as well.
The passenger, 21-year-old Alan Pena Sabone, also from Bogotá, faced multiple charges including disobeying a lawful order and providing false identification. To add to the complexity, Savone had an outstanding warrant for felony robbery in Colorado.
The sheriff’s office emphasized that this case illustrates how technology, proactive law enforcement, and collaboration among deputies, dispatchers, and air support work together effectively to identify and apprehend suspects in the community.
