Alex de Minaur feels 'broken inside' after leaving Wimbledon

Alex de Minaur has opened up about how recent defeats have affected his mental wellbeing.

In a noteworthy match, ninth seed Flavio Cobolli triumphed over the fifth seed de Minaur with scores of 7-5, 7-6 (4), 6-3 during the fourth round at Wimbledon, dashing one of the Australian’s best hopes of making it to his first Grand Slam semi-final.

Despite reaching the quarterfinals in each major tournament, de Minaur expressed his feelings candidly. “I’m heartbroken. That’s the reality. You invest so much time and effort into this, and then you have moments like this,” he stated in a post-match conference.

De Minaur had a favorable lead of 5-2 in the second set, but Cobolli made an impressive comeback to secure a two-set lead.

Reflecting on his future, he said, “I’m not going to compete in tournaments for a while, but, you know, those moments start accumulating. The goals and dreams I have begin to seem more distant than before. A few years back, I felt I was making progress; now, it feels like I’m slipping away from that dream. It’s definitely becoming tougher.”

Cobolli, on the other hand, has successfully reached the Wimbledon quarterfinals for the second consecutive year. Just a month before, he reached his first major final at the French Open, where he was narrowly defeated by Alexander Zverev in five sets.

During the match, commentator Todd Woodbridge remarked on de Minaur’s apparent lack of aggressiveness and his challenges during service games, noting that he landed only half of his first serves throughout the match. “He’s not in the game at the moment,” Woodbridge mentioned while speaking to the BBC.

Earlier in the year, de Minaur’s top performance at a major was during the Australian Open, where he made it to the quarterfinals again but lost in straight sets to the eventual champion, Carlos Alcaraz.
