Alex Ovechkin and the Majority of the Capitals Team Choose Not to Participate in Pride Night

On Saturday, the Washington Capitals hosted a “Pride Night” festival, encouraging fans and players to wear LGBTQ-themed clothing as a show of support for the LGBTQ community.

However, participation among the team was limited.

Out of the 20 Capitals players who played against the Florida Panthers, only eight used rainbow tape on their hockey sticks: John Carlson, Nick Dowd, Brandon Duhaime, Hendricks LaPierre, Connor McMichael, Dylan Strome, Logan Thompson, and Trevor van Riemsdyk. This has become a common way for NHL players to join in on Pride Nights.

Most of the team, including star player Alex Ovechkin, opted not to use the rainbow tape.

Since 2023, the NHL has prohibited themed jerseys, making rainbow tape the primary method for players to express solidarity with the LGBTQ community.

The difference in participation among players can be seen in their nationalities. All eight players who participated were from either the United States or Canada, while the twelve players who did not were primarily European, especially from Russia, Slovakia, or Scandinavia.

Despite the low participation, the team still made a strong effort to celebrate Pride Night. Fans were greeted with numerous videos and statements from the Capitals organization, voicing their support for the LGBTQ community.

“We proudly support the LGBTQ+ community and celebrate the importance of inclusion every day,” said Caps center Dylan Strome in one of the videos.

The topic of player participation in NHL Pride Nights gained attention in 2023 when Flyers defenseman Ivan Provorov refused to don a Pride-themed jersey provided by the Philadelphia team. Provorov cited his Russian Orthodox faith as the reason for his decision to abstain from the event.

In response to this, the NHL released a statement reiterating that players have the option to decide which initiatives they wish to support.

The Capitals ended up losing to the Panthers with a score of 5-2.
