Ovechkin’s Return for Another Season
Alex Ovechkin is back in action.
The NHL’s leading scorer has inked a one-year deal worth $4.25 million to play another season with the Capitals. The announcement came on Thursday.
Interestingly, if Ovechkin appears in just 10 games next year, he’s set to rake in $9 million, as reported.
Just months ago, Ovechkin was weighing the idea of retirement. It seems that his decision to continue is closely tied to his health heading into what will be his 41st year.
In the press release, Ovechkin expressed his excitement, stating, “I’m back! I want to thank everyone for giving me and my family the time to make this decision. I’m healthy, and I love playing hockey and competing to win.”
He added, “I’m looking forward to reuniting with my teammates as we aim for a playoff spot and a shot at winning. See you in September, Washington, D.C.!”
Last season, the 40-year-old played all 82 games, achieving 32 goals and 64 points, though the Capitals unfortunately missed the playoffs for the first time in three years.
Despite missing the postseason, Ovechkin, who was the No. 1 overall pick in 2004, has plenty to show for his illustrious career as he heads into his 22nd season.
In addition to breaking Wayne Gretzky’s career scoring record in April 2025, Ovechkin has led the Capitals to three Presidents Trophies during his time. He was also pivotal in securing the Capitals’ first Stanley Cup title back in 2018.
His playoff performance was impressive, earning him the Conn Smythe Trophy after scoring 15 goals in 24 games.
To date, Ovechkin boasts 929 career goals and 1,687 points across 1,573 regular-season games, plus an additional 77 goals and 147 points in 161 postseason games.
As he gears up for what could be his final season, the Capitals are eager to improve on last year’s 43-30-9 record and make a return to the playoffs.
