Alex Padilla States That Undocumented Immigrants Are Long-Term Residents Who Simply Lack Documentation

Senator Padilla Discusses Immigration Issues

California Democrat Senator Alex Padilla stated in a recent NBC interview that individuals living in the U.S. illegally should be regarded as “undocumented” long-term residents.

He noted a decline in illegal crossings during President Donald Trump’s second term, which coincided with efforts to tighten border security and implement mass deportations. When NBC’s Kristen Welker asked whether Padilla deserved acknowledgment for the “record-low intersections at the border,” he emphasized the need to examine how that decline occurred.

“It’s essential to consider various aspects of our immigration system,” Padilla said. “While I agree that border security is vital, what truly matters is the welfare of those who have been living here for years.” He highlighted the plight of long-term undocumented residents facing harsh treatment from current administration policies.

Under the Biden-Harris administration, there have been significant numbers of illegal crossings, leading to challenges in cities like New York and Denver. Padilla mentioned that this has created issues with rising housing and service costs.

“Most of those affected by arrests and deportations do not have violent criminal records,” he pointed out. “They contribute positively to our economy.”

The border crisis has also reportedly led to increased drug trafficking and tragic incidents, such as the death of 22-year-old Laken Riley. Additionally, there are concerns about approximately 300,000 immigrant children, many believed to be victims of trafficking.

As part of Trump’s immigration enforcement strategy, the Department of Homeland Security prioritized the arrest of individuals posing public safety threats, such as those with records of serious crimes. However, officials have indicated that all individuals entering the U.S. illegally would face potential arrest, regardless of their backgrounds.

Following Trump’s election in November 2024, the Los Angeles City Council designated the city as a “sanctuary city.” This decision led to a lawsuit from the Justice Department, claiming it violated constitutional provisions and hindered immigration enforcement efforts.

Amidst this, downtown Los Angeles saw significant protests against the administration’s immigration policies, fueled by actions from politicians like Padilla and California Governor Gavin Newsom. These protests escalated into vandalism and unrest.
