Billionaire Alex Soros has come under fire for his remarks about the murder of two Israeli embassy staff members, even as he funds anti-Israel initiatives through his Open Social Foundation (OSF).
Soros, the son of George Soros, expressed regret over the killings of Sarah Milgrim and Jaron Lisinsky near the Capital Jewish Museum, describing the act as “evil” in its most fundamental sense.
The two staff members were shot outside the museum during an event on Wednesday evening.
Authorities in Washington, D.C. have arrested a suspect, 31-year-old Elias Rodriguez, linked to the attack. He reportedly approached a group including the victims before opening fire.
Rodriguez was later detained inside the museum, where he allegedly shouted, “Free, free Palestine!” while in custody.
While Soros condemned the violence, many responses to his statement highlighted the funding he provides to various radical anti-Israel organizations, which some accuse of fostering anti-Semitic sentiments.
One user, Joseph Janecca, suggested that the Soros family shares responsibility for the tragedy, stating, “Their blood is in your hands as much as their murderers.” Another user, Carl White, added that Soros should be held accountable for the hate he allegedly supports.
Critics, including Eitan Fishberger, pointed out that Soros has funded leftist groups that openly denounce Israel and label its actions as genocide.
Rodriguez’s specific affiliations are still unclear, but Soros’s financial backing of numerous left-wing organizations is well documented. In 2023, Israeli Minister Amichii Chikli commented that he views Soros as mirroring his father’s anti-Israel stance, suggesting that he does not expect Soros to support pro-Zionist efforts.
Chikli accused OSF of funding organizations like Human Rights Watch, which he claims aims to demonize Israel as an apartheid state and associated it with support for the BDS movement. He remarked that Soros has even contributed to radical Palestinian groups he views as undermining Israel’s Jewish identity.
George Soros has faced backlash for allegedly funding non-governmental organizations that support Hamas, with Israeli ambassador Girad Eldan condemning these actions as harmful to Israel. Eldan added that for years, Soros has donated to entities that aim to isolate Israel without offering real solutions to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
