Alexander Soros Attends Mayor Mamdani’s Event
Alexander Soros, who heads the Open Society Foundations, expressed his gratitude on X this week for attending Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s event titled “Building an Economy for the Many” at Gracie Mansion. This gathering attracted several prominent left-wing leaders during the United Nations General Assembly week.
The son of billionaire George Soros shared his thoughts on X, tagging Mamdani along with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, Mia Mottley from Barbados, and António Costa, the European Council President and a former socialist prime minister of Portugal.
Soros described the gathering as an inspiring experience and praised both New York and its Democratic Socialist mayor. He stated, “It’s been so inspiring to see the greatest city in the world showcase its values, strengths, and ideals. So proud of NYC!”
The breakfast held at the taxpayer-funded mayoral residence was organized with support from the Global Progress Foundation, which is led by Sánchez. Patrick Gaspard, a former president of the Open Society Foundations, served as the moderator, as reported by NewsCord citing La Vanguardia.
Sánchez took the opportunity at the event to highlight his government’s economic achievements and position the leaders present as a counterforce to their adversaries. “That is why the powerful fear us,” the Spanish prime minister remarked, “because day after day, we show that a different path is possible, and it works.”
Mamdani also emphasized Spain’s policies, commending Sánchez as a supporter of working-class individuals and referencing a 61 percent increase in Spain’s minimum wage over the past eight years. He urged the leaders present to extend “equality and justice to further horizons.”
Costa, formerly the mayor of Lisbon, informed Mamdani that his position is one of unparalleled influence. “You have the best job that a politician can do,” Costa noted.
La Vanguardia also mentioned that both Sánchez and Mamdani consider Israel’s actions in Gaza as “genocide” and that they reject the previous Trump administration’s push for European nations to increase military spending.
This breakfast took place just days after President Donald Trump met with Mamdani at the same residence. Mamdani told CNN’s Christiane Amanpour that he believes his political approach will “absolutely translate on a national level.”
