Alhambra police dog discovers about 440 pounds of cocaine during a traffic stop

Cocaine Discovery During California Traffic Stop

A routine traffic stop in California escalated significantly when a police K-9 discovered around 200 kilos, or roughly 440 pounds, of cocaine concealed inside an SUV filled with cardboard boxes, according to authorities.

The Alhambra Police Department noted that the situation unfolded during a traffic stop on Valley Boulevard, close to the 710 Freeway. The reason for the stop wasn’t provided, but officers noticed that the driver had an unusually large load of items in his vehicle.

In a light-hearted comment, police remarked, “The driver was transporting more cardboard boxes than Amazon on Prime Day.”

Incredible Drug Busts

As the investigation continued, the driver started to explain the contents of the boxes. Initially, he claimed he was returning home to Huntington Park from a relative’s house and insisted the boxes didn’t belong to him. However, his story changed, evolving into “version 2.0,” where he asserted he was transporting diesel parts to a friend’s shop.

This is where K-9 Otis and his handler entered the scene to assist with the investigation. Police indicated Otis’s keen sense of smell led officers to further inspect the SUV, resulting in the discovery of a significant amount of cocaine.

“Thanks to Otis’ top-tier nose, he alerted to the vehicle, and officers uncovered around 200 kilos of cocaine,” the police noted.

The driver, identified as Julio Rangel from Huntington Park, was subsequently arrested and booked into the Alhambra Police Department jail. Following the operation, Otis was celebrated as the hero of the day.

Community Reaction

Expressions of gratitude poured in for K-9 Otis, with many on social media praising his skills.
A common sentiment was that Otis deserved a promotion, or at the very least, a hearty meal for his excellent work. “Give that dog a bone!” one user exclaimed, while another humorously commented, “No one escapes from the Long Paw of …. The DOG!”

Clearly, Otis made quite an impression not just on the police, but on the community as well.
