Alina Habba, one of former President Trump's lawyers, said the attempted assassination of the Republican candidate was an “embarrassment” for President Biden's administration.
A senior adviser to President Donald Trump's 2024 presidency said “politics” was getting in the way of security and claimed assets for the Secret Service, tasked with protecting the former president, were being cut.
“No president of this country, Republican or Democrat, should ever be put in this situation, not once, but twice,” Hubba said Friday during an appearance on “Jesse Watters Primetime” with Fox News host Jesse Watters.
“This is an embarrassment to our country. This is an embarrassment to President Trump,” she continued. “And frankly, this is an embarrassment to Harris and Biden, because they're the ones in power right now. It concerns me deeply to deny assets to a president and to a future, frankly future, president, and the currently most active candidate.”
“But it does matter that we're not giving them the tools to protect former presidents, president-elect, candidates, anybody in this country. That's a problem with this administration.”
Haba's comments came less than a week after Secret Service agents engaged a suspect at the Trump International Golf Club in Florida on Sept. 15. The suspect, Ryan Wesley Routh, 58, is accused of pointing a rifle at the perimeter fence of the Trump golf course. The suspect fled the scene and was later arrested by local authorities. The suspect was indicted on two federal gun offenses on Monday.
Secret Service Acting Director Ronald Rowe told reporters on Monday that at the time of the golf course incident, Trump was receiving the same level of security as President Biden and Vice President Harris.
“The Secret Service moved to maintain increased assets and security levels … and those were implemented yesterday,” he said.
“The president knows the Secret Service is providing the highest level of security. … There are a number of tactical assets in place following what happened 60 days ago. Those elements are working,” he added.
The House of Representatives passed a bill on Friday to beef up security for the former president in light of the threats. The bill, which has zero opposition, now goes to the Senate. The bill was introduced by Reps. Mike Lawler (R-NY) and Ritchie Torres (D-NY).
“So I want to make my position clear,” she said. “I love the investigators who help us, I love the police, but I also love the people who give their time away from their families to protect all of us, the police. You know, we're not cutting the police budget, but this is a real problem.”
