TikTok star Alix Earle has apologized for using the N-word in a post when she was 13 years old.
“A few weeks ago, screenshots were leaked from my old ask.fm account that showed me using derogatory language from the summer of 2014,” the 23-year-old influencer said in a statement shared to her Instagram Story on Monday.
“I want to take responsibility and make it clear that at 13 years old I did not understand the extremely offensive meaning behind that word. That is not an excuse for using that language in any situation or at any age. It is absolutely not the way I speak or my position.”
Earlier this month, Earl’s past comments resurface online rear Posted in a Reddit thread 2 years ago.
The posts showed the username “Alixxxxxx” using racist slang while replying to other users on the platform, where users can ask questions publicly or anonymously.
The social media personality came under fire for not addressing her comments sooner, which she acknowledged in a statement on Monday.
“I regret the way I handled this situation,” Earl wrote, claiming that she was advised not to speak up but realized that was “wrong.”
“No one can blame me but myself for standing my ground and not following my instincts and speaking up sooner,” she continued.
“Because I did not address this, my silence has allowed others to fill the void with rumors that are not true,” Earl added. The allegations were made by Jesse Smiles and Lily Marston, hosts of the “Do We Know Them?” podcast.She claimed she trademarked the offensive post to prevent it from being shared.
Earl called the allegations “completely absurd” and “baseless.”
She also denied rumors that the brand had cut ties with her over the controversy.
“Regardless of what is being said online, I wanted to come here and state the facts and most importantly apologize,” Earl concluded.
