All 12 children being treated for injuries from this week’s Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl parade shooting have been released from the hospital as of Saturday, the Post reported.
Children’s Mercy Hospital in Overland Park, just south of Kansas City, accepted children injured in Wednesday’s shooting. Nine of them had sustained gunshot wounds.
All were sent home by Saturday, a hospital spokesperson told the Post.
“We share great news: All patients have been discharged from Children’s Mercy,” she said.
She thanked hospital staff for the “support and blessings” they received after the horrific incident, which began as a fun event to celebrate the Chiefs’ Super Bowl victory.
Samuel Arellano, 10, was one of the young victims shot at the parade and treated at CMH. The bullet missed his lung by a few centimeters, which he and his family called a “miracle,” according to reports.
Sisters Madison and Melia Reyes, ages 10 and 8, respectively, were also hit by bullets and were treated at a children’s hospital.
Their mother’s cousin, Lisa López-Gabran, a 43-year-old mother of two and Chiefs fan, died shortly after being shot in the melee.
Police said the shooting, which resulted from an altercation, left at least 39 people injured, 23 of whom suffered gunshot wounds.
Kansas City police said the victims ranged in age from 8 to 47, and at least half were under 16.
The other three victims were still being treated at University Health Clinic as of Saturday. According to the Kansas City Star. One of the shooting victims remains in critical condition, but the other two are recovering, according to the hospital.
The University Health Department treated a total of 12 patients, eight with gunshot wounds and four with other injuries.
Authorities announced Friday that two teens have been charged in connection with the shooting.
