Eight Inmates from Riverbend Detention Center Recaptured Within 24 Hours
Just under a day after their escape, all eight inmates who fled from the Riverbend Detention Center in East Carroll Parish, Louisiana, have been apprehended. This development marks the conclusion of the ongoing investigation led by the Louisiana State Police.
Governor Jeff Landry expressed gratitude on social media, thanking the local law enforcement for their rapid response in capturing the fugitives. He stated, “Justice will be served.”
The inmates who escaped were facing serious charges, including murder, aggravated assault with a firearm, and evasion from law enforcement, as indicated by court documents.
The individuals recaptured include Destin Brogan (22), Colin Loney (21), Chrisian Salinas (21), Kevin Slaughter (25), Copelon Vicknair (19), Hugo Molina (27), Trenton Taplin (29), and Savion Wheeler (31).
Immediately following the escape, an investigation was initiated, involving multiple agencies coordinating efforts to locate the fugitives. Attorney General Liz Murrill mentioned her communication with local authorities, assuring support, including from the Fugitive Apprehension Unit.
The search concentrated on rural areas around Lake Providence, but law enforcement was prepared to expand their search statewide if necessary. Residents were advised to take precautions like locking doors and vehicles, and to report anything unusual. Fortunately, no related injuries or crimes have been documented thus far.
Three of the escapees were recaptured just hours after their flight, indicating effective police response in certain regions. The remaining five were a bit trickier to catch, possibly due to the terrain and any prior planning they had undertaken.
This incident is part of a broader trend of escapes in Louisiana, raising concerns about prison infrastructure, understaffing, and security issues. The state’s correctional system has faced relentless scrutiny for issues that seem to be contributing to these occurrences.
Overcrowding and maintenance problems within the state’s prison facilities have been hot-button issues for quite some time and continue to pose significant challenges.
