All Eyes on Harvard as Police Clear Pro-Hamas Encampments at MIT, Penn

The Harvard University “encampment” is the last remaining pro-Palestinian (in effect, pro-Hamas) camp after police removed protesters from nearby Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the University of Pennsylvania on Friday. It is one of the main occupied territories.

according to The TechnologyMIT Student Newspaper, Police Arrived They gathered in the center of campus early Friday morning and began clearing the encampment and making arrests (emphasis in original).

4:03am: Pro-Palestinian student demonstrators were given 15 minutes’ notice to leave the premises.

Within minutes, camp officials and other pro-Palestinian student demonstrators were escorted from Kresge Oval to Mass Avenue.

7:38am: In a statement to the MIT community at 7:38 a.m., Chancellor Kornbluth detailed this morning’s events and provided a timeline of key events from the encampment’s establishment to its removal. “We had no choice but to remove such a high-risk flashpoint in the very heart of campus,” Kornbluth wrote.

Later that day, pro-Palestinian protesters and their supporters held a rally on campus to protest the removal of the camp. “Oink, oink, pig, pig / I’m going to ruin your life,” one person shouted. The Technology report.

of Daily Pennsylvanian report Thirty-three people, including students, were arrested at the Philadelphia campus.

Pennsylvania State Police officers in riot gear, with assistance from Philadelphia police, arrested 33 people at the Gaza Solidarity encampment around 6 a.m. Friday.

The arrests and tent removal occurred on the 16th day of the encampment, which began in the afternoon of April 25th. [sic] At least eight tents were moved Tuesday as the encampment expanded east of the Ben Franklin statue. Pennsylvania State Police made the arrests about an hour later, including removing several people from the tent.

The spokesperson added that approximately 33 people were arrested “without incident” and charged with trespassing. Pennsylvania police said they searched the encampment and found “several long (6 to 10 feet) heavy gauge chains and smaller chains with nuts and bolts that could be used as weapons.”

of Daily Pennsylvanian It noted that “at least” seven of the 33 people arrested were students. Penn, once known as a heavily Jewish campus, has become a hotbed of anti-Semitic rhetoric and protests since the Oct. 7 Hamas attack.
