All Lower 48 states to dip below freezing Tuesday as polar vortex blasts coast-to-coast

Some states in the lower 48 woke up to sub-zero temperatures Tuesday morning as a weather pattern keeps arctic air stuck in the eastern half of the country until at least the end of the month.

Snow from last weekend's deadly winter storm will hinder warming in the Plains and mid-Atlantic as this first round of severe cold air penetrates areas as far south as the Gulf Coast.

Although it will not be a historic record cold, weather model That suggests it remains dangerous for anyone caught outside without proper clothing, the Fox Prediction Center warned.

A cold weather advisory was issued Tuesday morning for the Gulf Coast region from Texas to Florida, with temperatures ranging from the teens in south Texas to the -20s and -30s in the central and northern plains, affecting millions of people. I woke up to the cold wind.

New snowfall caused areas of Kansas and Missouri to wake up to near-zero temperatures Tuesday morning.

Temperatures are also expected to continue dropping across much of the South, as the next winter storm could bring snow to areas stretching from Dallas to Nashville, Tennessee.

The weather pattern is expected to keep temperatures well below normal east of the Rocky Mountains through at least this weekend, according to the Fox Prediction Center.

There could be some significant cold in the far north, but it shouldn't be record breaking.

In particular, temperatures remain very cold in areas snow-covered by recent winter storms, resulting in temperatures 10 to 10 degrees below average from the Central Plains, mid-Mississippi, and Ohio valleys to the Appalachian Mountains. It could be ~20 degrees colder.

According to the Fox Prediction Center, the cold air is persistent and forecast models predict it will remain in the East in varying degrees of magnitude through the end of the month.

This will almost certainly result in the first colder-than-average January in the eastern United States since 2022, and perhaps the coldest since 2014 or 2011.
