Allison Pearson’s ‘racist’ tweet is at centre of Telegraph’s row with police | Telegraph Media Group

Readers of the Daily Telegraph woke up this week to a series of front page headlines alleging serious threats to free speech in the wake of a star columnist's “Kafkaesque” encounter with police.

The right-wing newspaper has explained how Essex Police showed up on Alison Pearson's doorstep last weekend to tell her she was being investigated for allegedly inciting racial hatred in a tweet she posted last year.

The Telegraph and Pearson said the post that led to two police officers knocking on her door at 9.40am on Remembrance Sunday was unclear.

But the Guardian believes it has found the post in the middle of the row.

This is a retweet by Pearson of a photo posted several months ago amid heightened tensions over the crackdown on protests in the Gaza Strip. It shows a group of people of color posing with flags on a British street, flanked by three police officers.

When Pearson saw the photo, he was furious and wrote a tweet criticizing the Metropolitan Police.

“On Saturday I was invited to have a photo taken with some lovely peaceful British friends in Israel, but the police refused. Look at this bunch of people smiling with the Jew haters.”

In fact, sources have confirmed that the photo is from Manchester, so the officers in the photo are from Greater Manchester Police, not London Police.

The implication that the Muslims in the photo are anti-Semitic and support Hamas is undermined by the green and maroon flag they are flying. The flag is used by supporters of Pakistan's political party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). It also has the word “Pakistan” written on it quite clearly.

PTI was founded by Imran Khan, a former international cricketer who became Prime Minister of Pakistan before being exiled and imprisoned.

The person who complained to the police is neither Muslim nor the person in the photo. They are former civil servants trained in criminal law. They, who asked to remain anonymous for fear of retaliation, particularly from far-right groups, told the Guardian that Mr Pearson's posts were “racist and inflammatory”, which Mr Pearson denies. I am doing it.

They further added: “Pearson tweeted that she had nothing to do with Palestine or the London protests. She tweeted a photo of two people of color holding flags of Pakistani political parties standing next to several GMP workers. Her description of the two people who did…'' Colors like Jew-hating are racist and inflammatory.

“Every time an influential person makes a negative comment about people of color, I see an increase in racist abuse against me as a person of color, but after that tweet… Every day is no exception.”

The disturbance led to Essex Police Report a telegram to someone media standards organizationalleges that some of that report was false. The force also established a “gold group” used by police to deal with serious incidents.

Last Sunday, police officers went to Mr Pearson's home and asked him to attend a voluntary interview following complaints that he had incited racial hatred.

The Telegraph and Pearson newspapers condemned police and said the visit was an affront to free speech and the freedom of the press. Their distrust was not just of Elon Musk, but also of senior lawyers, former Telegraph reporter Boris Johnson, and other leading Conservatives.

The complainant first went to another unit in April, which took it over. Essex Police initially did not want to investigate, but later reviewed their decision and decided they should investigate.

The complainant stated: “As a former public servant, I was so concerned by the tweets Mr. Pearson posted last year that I called the police. Look, I'll blame you.

“This is not a debate about freedom of speech. This is about a journalist who tweeted falsely as tensions rose in London following the October 7th atrocities.

“She could have tweeted that she was wrong and apologized. She didn't do that.

“I'm not a left-wing activist. I'm just a regular person who was shocked by her original tweet. And her recent doubling down doesn't help.”

In a post to X on Thursday, Mr Pearson wrote: “The British public must be informed about the Kafkaesque state of our justice system.

“Instead of solving horrific crimes, police are scaring people.”

Officers' visit to Mr Pearson's Essex home was recorded on body-worn video. One source insisted that police were being polite and simply trying to arrange a proper interrogation in which Mr. Pearson could have his lawyer present and answer questions, in accordance with the laws governing police interrogations.

Neither Pearson nor the Telegraph responded to requests for comment.
