Concerns Over Sanctuary Policies Ignoring ICE Orders
Recent reports suggest that sanctuary city officials have been neglecting Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) directives, leading to the release of undocumented immigrants with criminal backgrounds back into communities. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) expressed strong disapproval of these actions.
In a press release issued on Monday, DHS pointed out that Democratic politicians are continuously disregarding ICE requests concerning detainees. Notably, Illinois Governor JB Pritzker was specifically mentioned as a vocal critic of ICE actions during President Trump’s tenure.
Since early January 2025, approximately 1,768 undocumented immigrants with criminal records have been released in Illinois, raising alarms about public safety.
The press release outlined various serious offenses committed by these individuals, which include murder, assault, robbery, drug crimes, weapon offenses, and sexual crimes. Presently, Illinois holds around 4,015 foreign nationals, many of whom are similarly charged.
“Governor Pritzker and his administration are jeopardizing American lives by allowing violent offenders back into our communities,” remarked Assistant Secretary of State Tricia McLaughlin. She urged the governor to halt what she termed a reckless approach and honor ICE’s requests regarding the detained individuals. “It’s just common sense. We shouldn’t let these offenders back into society to commit further crimes,” she emphasized.
ICE previously reached out to sanctuary states, including California, New York, and Illinois, advocating for collaboration to prevent the release of criminal elements. They warned these states of potential actions with the Department of Justice to address this ongoing issue.
Illinois and New York officials sent responses emphasizing their continued defiance of ICE’s authority, and California reportedly did not respond at all. ICE explained that they request local law enforcement to detain suspects for up to 48 hours after their scheduled release to facilitate important follow-up investigations.
Typically, these requests come after ICE has established probable cause regarding serious prior convictions. They stressed that recognizing these detainer requests is crucial for both public safety and for the protection of law enforcement officials. “Acknowledging these requests allows us to keep potentially dangerous individuals in a controlled setting rather than letting them freely navigate the community,” they stated.
The DHS release also featured images of nine particularly dangerous criminals who had been let go after Illinois officials ignored ICE’s detention requests.
Some individuals categorized as criminals remain in ICE custody or have already been deported from the U.S.
