‘Almost like a religious experience’: free Lady Gaga concert attracts 2.1m in Rio | Lady Gaga

On Saturday night, over 2 million fans turned out at Copacabana Beach for a free concert by Lady Gaga, creating an electrifying atmosphere similar to that of last year’s event featuring Madonna, which drew in 1.6 million people.

The crowd, made up of around 2.1 million “Little Monsters,” as Gaga’s fans call themselves, transformed the beachside area into “Gaga Cabana” for what has been deemed the pop star’s most significant performance to date. Many attendees were too young to have experienced her last concert in Brazil 13 years ago, and there was heightened anticipation since Gaga had previously canceled her 2017 appearance for health reasons.

As the clock struck 10 PM local time, the energy surged as Gaga took the stage. “I’ve been waiting for this for 15 years,” exclaimed Annaclara Saroman, a 26-year-old designer from São Paulo. Her excitement was palpable as she wore a black veil and oversized sunglasses.

Die-hard fans came from all over Brazil and beyond to attend this show, part of a promotional series leading up to the next tour. “I’ve been planning this trip for months,” shared Betina Foundes, a 40-year-old shopkeeper from Chile. Her daughter, an avid fan, described Gaga’s influence as almost religious.

The concert featured a mix of classic hits and tracks from her newest album, Mayhem, presented in a five-act performance. Recognizing her Brazilian audience, Gaga even had a translator interpret her heartfelt speech into Portuguese, further connecting with the crowd.

“Thank you for making history with me,” she said, appreciating the energy radiating from the audience. Fans had poured into Rio days before the event, creating a carnival-like vibe throughout the city. They camped outside their hotels, eagerly anticipating the concert, sharing their love for Gaga’s music.

“Gaga has helped me through tough times,” reflected Bella Donna, a 20-year-old in southern Brazil, indicating the pop star’s significant role in supporting the LGBTQ+ community. As Gaga performed songs that resonate with this audience, many fans waved rainbow flags, creating a colorful display of unity.

Karolayne Araújo noted Gaga’s universal appeal, saying she has a unique ability to connect with everyone. However, the concert also highlighted stark socioeconomic disparities, as wealthier attendees watched from luxury apartments. Yet, the free nature of the event made it accessible to those who might not usually afford such experiences.

“It’s a dream come true,” 19-year-old student Hugo Monteiro said, sporting a pink cowboy hat. The concert is expected to boost the local economy by around 600 million Reais (£80 million) and is part of a city initiative to hold major free music events annually for the next four years.

The night ended with heart-shaped fireworks illuminating the sky, a spectacular finale that will surely be hard to replicate in the future. But for Monteiro, it’s clear: “There’s no better place in the world for free concerts.”
