Alonso Martinez of NYCFC has surgery on his knee

Alonso Martinez Undergoes Successful Surgery Following Knee Injury

Alonso Martinez had a successful surgery on Thursday at Montefiore Einstein in the Bronx. This comes a few weeks after he tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, a setback that significantly impacted New York City FC’s playoff aspirations.

The injury occurred while he was on international duty with the Costa Rica national team back in November. Details on the extent of the injury were sparse, with NYCFC initially just announcing he had a “knee injury” around mid-November.

A statement released by the club on Thursday indicated that Martinez will begin rehabilitation with the club’s medical team. It sounds like a tough road ahead, considering reports had already suggested he might be sidelined for eight to nine months.

Martinez’s own social media hints at the gravity of the situation. In a post, he reflected on how difficult it was to accept not being able to play for a while, but expressed a determination to work hard and remain positive. It’s a mixed bag of emotions, really.

NYCFC shared their best wishes for a speedy recovery. How do you even process something like this, especially when you’ve been performing well—Martinez was the club’s top scorer, netting 17 goals during the regular season. He even added two goals in the playoff series against Charlotte FC. Losing him just when the team is pushing for playoff success feels particularly frustrating.

The timing couldn’t be worse. NYCFC had managed to secure a victory against the Philadelphia Union in the conference semifinals but then fell short against Inter Miami in the Eastern Conference finals last weekend. Having Martinez on the field could have made a real difference, perhaps altering the outcome of that match.

Now, with Martinez out for an extensive period, Todd Dunivant, the new athletic director for NYCFC, faces the challenge of finding a reliable replacement for the Costa Rican forward in goal. It’s an uphill battle, for sure, but the team’s resilience could be put to the test as they navigate this period.

As things stand, neither the club nor Martinez has given any clear timeline for his return. So, it remains to be seen how this situation will unfold.
