Suspect Pleads Not Guilty in Officer’s Shooting Death
A man with a history of felonies was in court Wednesday to present his defense regarding a shooting incident. Alfanso Talley, 27, pleaded not guilty to charges related to the death of Chicago Police Department Officer John Bartholomew, 28, during a hearing this morning in Illinois.
Bartholomew’s family was present in court, including Talley’s mother and another relative who occupied front-row seats. As Talley was led out, he called out, “Hug my mom,” which prompted someone else to embrace her.
After the court session, Talley was seen talking animatedly with John Catanzara Jr., president of the Fraternal Order of Police. Fox News Digital has reached out for comment on this interaction.
Talley’s public defender, Ryan Carlsen, mentioned after the hearing that they had raised issues concerning Talley’s medical treatment, noting his documented mental health problems and a turbulent upbringing involving foster care.
Prosecutors accuse Talley of fatally shooting Officer Bartholomew and seriously wounding Officer Nelson Crespo on April 25 at Swedish Hospital. Previously, authorities indicated that Talley had been arrested earlier that day for an armed robbery at a local Family Dollar, where a female employee was assaulted and her belongings taken.
After his arrest, Talley allegedly informed officers that he had taken drugs and requested hospital treatment. However, while being attended to, he reportedly retrieved a gun hidden under a blanket and shot two officers, attempting to escape afterwards.
Prosecutors argued that Talley’s actions were premeditated, suggesting he had planned the situation to exploit his hospital treatment as a means of escape. “He intended to pretend he had swallowed drugs,” they stated, emphasizing that he knew he would be taken to the hospital and his cuffs removed.
Following his initial court hearing, Judge Danthony Tedford decided that Talley would remain in custody until the trial. He is already facing a series of charges related to robbery and carjacking, having been ordered to stay detained after Judge John Reich Jr. granted prosecutors’ request related to revoking his pretrial release.
This case has attracted national scrutiny after it was revealed that Talley, a seven-time felon, shot Bartholomew while being under electronic monitoring ordered by Judge Reich Jr. His criminal record included several convictions involving armed robbery, firearm possession as a felon, and assaulting an officer, dating back to 2017 through 2023. He was released due to Illinois’ SAFE-T law, which implemented cashless bail in 2021.
Talley is facing multiple charges, including murder, attempted murder, armed robbery, and unlawful use of a weapon, among others. He is set to appear again in court for a discovery hearing on June 25.
