Alyssa Liu Represents Team USA’s Hope for Gold in Figure Skating
Alyssa Liu is now Team USA’s sole contender for an individual figure skating gold medal at the upcoming Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics. As the reigning world champion, Liu stood out as the only American woman in pursuit of gold after the short program held on Tuesday night.
During her performance, Liu successfully executed the challenging triple Lutz-triple loop combo, placing her just two points away from the current leader, Ami Nakai, and narrowly behind her fellow Japanese teammate, Kaori Sakamoto.
“I’m really happy with my skating,” Liu expressed post-competition. “Having my brother, my best friend, and a lot of my family there was amazing. I saw them during warm-ups and my routine. It’s a great moment because they don’t usually get to see me perform like this. I felt so connected to my program, almost on a different level.”
Amber Glenn, another American skater, finished close behind in 13th place, visibly upset as she left the ice in tears.
Isabeau Levitt faced criticism for not completing her triple loops, resulting in a drop in scoring and an 8th place finish. Many were disheartened to see a series of disappointing results from American skaters following the team gold earned last week.
In other performances, Madison Chock and Evan Bates secured a silver medal in ice dancing, amidst questionable judging decisions that sparked some controversy. Additionally, Ilia Marin, a two-time world champion and a top favorite, finished eighth after falling twice during the men’s final. The defeats have added significant pressure on Liu to secure an individual gold and prevent Team USA from leaving empty-handed in figure skating.
When asked about facing her Japanese competitors, Liu mentioned, “I’m not focused on that. My goal is to perform my program and share my story, without needing to be above or below anyone else to do it.” This perspective highlights her determination to focus on her own journey rather than solely on competition.
