Amanda Seyfried: Why was there backlash after she described Charlie Kirk as 'hateful' shortly after his death?

Amanda Seyfried on Backlash Over Charlie Kirk Comments

Amanda Seyfried recently shared her views on the backlash she encountered after commenting on Charlie Kirk’s statements. The actress, who was 39 at the time, expressed her feelings about Kirk shortly after his assassination, suggesting that the criticism she faced stemmed from people wanting to bring her down.

A Disturbing Reaction

After Kirk’s death during a speaking event in Utah, Seyfried addressed an edited video that showcased the controversial rhetoric of the political commentator, claiming, “He was a hateful person.” In response, she turned to Instagram to clarify her stance, expressing that she was “offended by the misogynistic and racist comments.”

In a recent interview with GQ Magazine, Seyfried maintained her position despite being surprised by the strong feelings her words evoked. “A, I’m allowed to speak up about my feelings, and B, I do it in a way that’s not necessarily unkind,” she stated.

Seyfried attributed the hostility directed at her to a broader societal tendency to attack others. “There’s just this tremendous fear and hatred and an urge to bash and crush. What I’ve gone through is just a small piece of that,” she added. She emphasized the importance of allowing children to express their opinions safely as long as it doesn’t harm others.

The actress reflected on her confusion during the situation, recalling being at the airport with a lack of adequate security, thinking, “This is crazy.”

Clarifying Intent

Just days after Kirk’s murder, Seyfried called for what she viewed as “vibrant speech,” which Kirk was known for. On September 17, not long after the incident, she wrote, “I’m not trying to add fuel to the fire. I just want to bring clarity to something that has been irresponsibly taken out of context. A vibrant debate, isn’t that what we should have?”

In the same post, she acknowledged the complexity of the situation, stating, “We are forgetting the nuances of humanity. While I can be offended by misogynistic and racist rhetoric, I also agree that the murder of Charlie Kirk is absolutely disturbing and deplorable in every way imaginable.”

No Regrets

By December, Seyfried expressed dissatisfaction with suggestions that she should apologize. “I’m not really apologizing,” she remarked, downplaying the timing of her comments in relation to Kirk’s murder. “I mean, I commented on just one thing. I said something based on real reality, real footage, real quotes,” she explained.

She reiterated her belief that her statements were valid and thanked social media for allowing her to clarify her thoughts. “It was about getting my voice back because I felt like it was being stolen and recontextualized. Of course, that’s what humans do,” she concluded.
