Amazon Experiences Growth in Prescription Services as Individuals Avoid Health Insurance Due to Rising Expenses

Online pharmacies, including offerings from a well-known e-commerce company, are gaining traction as health insurance costs continue to soar.

It seems Amazon is adapting to a changing landscape, as more people are leaving traditional health insurance for more affordable options. The company’s RxPass program, part of Amazon Pharmacy, alongside other subscription-based pharmacy services, is seeing a surge in interest, as reported by Reuters.

Since launching RxPass in 2023, the user base has tripled, and over 70% of clients are refilling three or more medications through the service, according to John Love, vice president at Amazon Pharmacy. Love noted, “This indicates that RxPass is appealing to those with ongoing health needs, where reliable access to affordable refills is crucial.”

For $5 a month, RxPass provides prescription plans through Amazon. In contrast, GoodRx has its own monthly plan called ‘Companion’ priced at $14.99, offering discounts on more than 250 generic medications.

No comments from Amazon representatives were available by the time of publication, and GoodRx did not quickly respond to requests for feedback.

Health insurance premiums and out-of-pocket expenses have dramatically increased, prompting millions to drop individual plans associated with the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Reuters highlighted that ACA premiums rose by over 20% in 2026. Additionally, a paper from Wakely Consulting Group estimated that costs could climb as much as 26% this year.

The study from WTW suggests that overall healthcare costs for employers, who cover most private insurance, might rise by 11% in 2027.

Small businesses and healthcare professionals are wrestling with these high costs, leading many to consider alternative payment models. Elaine Parker, president of the Job Creators Network Foundation, mentioned on September 7 that “soaring health plan expenses pose a significant challenge for small businesses functioning on tight margins.”

A representative from the Coalition to Strengthen America’s Healthcare expressed concern that if independent and small healthcare providers continue to forgo health insurance, it could further stress the broader healthcare system, especially if those providers avoid preventive care, fall ill, or can’t afford treatment, ultimately affecting their ability to work.
