(Nexstar) – Have you unexpectedly received a refund from Amazon, even though you haven’t returned anything in a while? You’re definitely not alone.
Many Amazon shoppers have reported getting refunds for purchases made years ago.
“I checked my account and noticed a refund for a purchase I made seven years ago!” one user shared on Reddit earlier this month. “I’m really grateful for the $13, but… seven years is a long time!”
This post included screenshots of emails sent by Amazon, which explained that they were reaching out regarding “unresolved product returns.” The message indicated, “After recent internal reviews, we found we couldn’t confirm that the correct item was returned, so we identified a very small group of unresolved returns.”
“We could have better (and sooner) communicated with these customers to clarify their statuses and resolve returns,” the email stated. “Given how much time has passed, we recognize our mistake and have decided to process a refund for these returns.”
The email mentioned that refunds would go back to the original payment method. If that isn’t available, it would be converted to an Amazon gift card for your account.
“No action is needed from you to receive your refund. We have updated our process to ensure we contact customers more swiftly regarding unresolved returns,” the email explained.
Other Reddit users noted similar experiences, mentioning they received identical messages and refunds related to returns they had made in recent years. Reported refunds varied widely, from just a few dollars to potentially hundreds, according to these users.
Amazon hasn’t provided immediate comments or further information, but the details in the email have been reviewed.
Earlier this month, Amazon’s CFO, Brian Olsavsky, mentioned that the company faced a one-time charge of around $1.1 billion in the first quarter due, in part, to outstanding “historic customer returns.”
This situation potentially ties into a lawsuit against Amazon over its handling of returns.
According to reports, the 2023 lawsuit claims that Amazon reversed refunds for customers after they left returns at designated kiosks. Customers received immediate refunds but could later be charged the full price if the items weren’t returned to Amazon facilities.
It’s uncertain if this lawsuit is related to the recent round of refunds issued by Amazon.
Amazon’s return policy generally states that most items can be returned for a refund, exchange, or replacement within 30 days of delivery, provided they are in their original or unused condition.
“If Amazon (or a third-party seller) gets an item back, a refund will be processed, assuming the customer is eligible for it,” the policy noted, adding that it can take up to 30 days for returns to be received and processed. “In certain situations, the timeframe for refunds may be extended.”
